Quantifying Resource Use in Computations
نویسنده
چکیده
It is currently not possible to quantify the resources needed to perform a computation. As a consequence, it is not possible to reliably evaluate the hardware resources needed for the application of algorithms or the running of programs. This is apparent in both computer science, for instance, in cryptanalysis, and in neuroscience, for instance, comparative neuro-anatomy. A System versus Environment game formalism is proposed based on Computability Logic that allows to define a computational work function that describes the theoretical and physical resources needed to perform any purely algorithmic computation. Within this formalism, the cost of a computation is defined as the sum of information storage over the steps of the computation. The size of the computational device, eg, the action table of a Universal Turing Machine, the number of transistors in silicon, or the number and complexity of synapses in a neural net, is explicitly included in the computational cost. The proposed cost function leads in a natural way to known computational trade-offs and can be used to estimate the computational capacity of real silicon hardware and neural nets. The theory is applied to a historical case of 56 bit DES key recovery, as an example of application to cryptanalysis. Furthermore, the relative computational capacities of human brain neurons and the C. elegans nervous system are estimated as an example of application to neural nets. keywords: computation, compatibility logic, neural nets, cryptanalysis

Efficiency of Centralized Structures in Data Envelopment Analysis Ratio Models
This paper investigates the centralized resource allocation with centralized structures by using the data envelopment analysis-ratio (DEA-R) models. To this end, it proposes a method to determine the resource allocation of centralized structures such that the ratio of inputs to outputs are minimized.
متن کاملDynamics of Food Chain Model: Role of Alternative Resource for Top Predator
In this paper, effect of alternative resource for top predator in food chain model with holling type III functional response is seen . Proposed model is demonstrated in respect of analytical as well numerical results. Bifurcation study with the variation of alternative resource and half saturation constants are done numerically. Simulation results shows that suitable alternati...
متن کاملConstrained Renewable Resource Allocation in Fuzzy Metagraphs via Min-Slack
This paper discusses that the fuzzy metagraphs can be used as a tool for scheduling and control of fuzzy projects. Often, available resources for executing projects may be limited. It is assumed the resources required to accomplish each activity of project (metagraph edges) is renewable. One of the common methods for scheduling projects is using the min-slack. So, first, the forward and bac...
متن کاملOPTIMAL RESOURCE ALLOCATION IN DEA WITH INTEGER VARIABLES
Resource allocation and optimal leveling are among the top challenges in project management. This paper presents a DEA-based procedure for determining an optimal level of inputs to produce a fixed level of outputs. To achieve this goal, we assume that the levels of outputs can be forecasted in the next season and the procedure will determine optimal level of inputs for all DMUs. Such as some of...
متن کاملQuantifying Nondeterminism in Finite Automata
Various ways of quantifying the nondeterminism in finite automata have been considered since the 1970’s. Roughly speaking, a nondeterminism measure can count the number of accepting computations (ambiguity), the number of all computations (computation width) or the amount of nondeterminism on a single best (or worst) computation on a given input. This paper surveys results on the growth rate of...
متن کاملA Bi-level Formulation for Centralized Resource Allocation DEA Models
In this paper, the common centralized DEA models are extended to the bi-level centralized resource allocation (CRA) models based on revenue efficiency. Based on the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) conditions, the bi-level CRA model is reduced to a one-level mathematical program subject to complementarity constraints (MPCC). A recurrent neural network is developed for solving this one-level mathematica...
